Samuel Morrison, a missionary who served twenty years in Africa, was retiring and on his way home. Someone was supposed to meet him at the ship landing to transport him to his new home.
But the ship he was on also had President Theodore Roosevelt's party on board. Teddy had been to Africa on a hunting trip. He had bagged a black mane lion and other trophies. The Army Band, and what seemed to be half of New York City, had turned out to welcome the President home. Finally, after the President's party had gone, the missionary was at the ship's rail alone.
