Call To Worship
Come and worship. Worship the God of truth who is present in our innermost hearts and who offers guidance in every aspect of our lives.
Collect
We come to you, O God, aware of your trust in us as speakers for you. Let the truths we illustrate through our actions be worthy of this trust. Let the attitudes we portray through our relationships with others be honorable. Let the words that come from our mouths reflect oneness with you. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We come to this place, O Sustainer, where we can admit to feeling vulnerability as human beings. We wish that you would put words into our mouths. We struggle with knowing the right thing to say. We ask this day to trust the soundness of our integrity and to remember that you, O God, are a mighty fortress and our strong salvation. Amen.
12B Hymns
"God Is My Strong Salvation" Tune: MEIN LEBEN
"Many Are The Lightbeams" Tune: LIGHTBEAMS
"A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" Tune: EIN' FESTE BURG
Fourth Sunday After Epiphany
Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 8:1-13
Theme: Puff Or Love?
Call To Worship
Are you full of puff or love? "Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up," says the apostle Paul. Certainly, we qualify, Paul must mean knowledge without wisdom. Surely, he suggests that knowledge is troublesome without love.
Collect
We come to you, O God, reminded that we must put love before all else in the command to love our neighbor as ourselves. For the sake of Jesus. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
God who created the human mind, let us acquire knowledge for the right reasons. Keep us from puffing up with self-importance. Keep us from strutting with long words and separating language that interferes with neighborly conversations. Help us avoid using our knowledge in ways that cause others to feel unfit. In our journey as Christians, let love season all that we do. In the name of Christ. Amen.
12B Hymns
"Love Came Down At Christmas" Tune: GARTAN or WHITNEY
"Lord, I Want To Be A Christian" Tune: I WANT TO BE A CHRISTIAN
"For The Healing Of The Nations" Tune: CWM RHONDDA
Fourth Sunday After Epiphany
Gospel: Mark 1:21-28
Theme: Influence
Call To Worship
Internet authority alerts us to the differences between empty power and valid presence. Jesus' authority invites our mindfulness of his source and his oneness of purpose. Come, let us worship the one, true God.
Collect
These days, O God, when the term "authority figure" signals more dismissal than dignity, we reaffirm our faith in Jesus as the one to follow. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We appreciate the power those whom we influence give us, O God. Guide us lest we snatch authority without knowing what we are doing. Teach us to ask the right questions before we give sanctuary to anyone who assumes authority. Ground our power in the principles of the Christian faith. Amen.
12B Hymns
"How Firm A Foundation" Tune: ADESTE FIDELES
"Silence! Frenzied, Unclean Spirit" Tune: AUTHORITY
"Tell Out, My Soul" Tune: WOODLANDS
