The words Of Institution
Children's sermon
Let Them Answer
(My preference was to have this during the regular children's sermon time. Have a small loaf of fresh bread and some grape juice with napkins and paper cups for the children to share. Also have some of the communion wafers for them to look at and taste.)
Good morning! Do you all like a mystery? (LTA) I love mysteries. So I have an enormous mystery for you today. But first I thought we'd share some bread and juice. (Pass the bread to them. It should be cut in chunks ahead of time. Ask them to share. Then give each a cup and pour some grape juice for them. Banana bread and apple juice works well, too. Wait until they have all had a taste before beginning.)
This was a nice little snack, wasn't it? (LTA) Was it the same as holy communion? (LTA) No. We didn't use the same kind of bread and wine. Would it have been holy communion if we had these wafers? (LTA - Pass out regular wafers.) What else was missing? (LTA) We didn't say the words of Jesus, did we? (LTA)
So we needed bread and we needed wine and we needed the words of Jesus for it to be holy communion. Now I have an even bigger mystery. What happens to the bread and wine? Do they change? (LTA) Some say yes, and some say no. Do they look the same? (LTA) Yes. They don't look like they changed. The bread stays bread and the wine stays wine. (Begin speaking quietly and mysteriously.) But Christ is really present! That is the mystery! How can that be? (LTA) I've been trying to figure that mystery out for years and years. All I know is what Jesus said. He said, "This is my body" and "This is my blood. Do this in remembrance of me." So, when the pastor says the words of Jesus, then Jesus is really in the bread and wine even though I don't see him. What do people receive when they receive the bread? (LTA) Yes. They receive Jesus. What do they receive when they receive the wine? (LTA) Right again. They receive Jesus. Isn't that neat? So the words the pastor reads in the communion service are really important and help make a mystery happen. Aren't they? (LTA) Do you see the veil over the bread and wine? (LTA) It's a symbol of the mystery. Jesus' body and blood are hidden in the bread and the wine. When people receive Jesus they receive a wonderful gift. What are some things Jesus did for people we heard about in Sunday school? (LTA) He healed people. He gave them food, so they receive spiritual food when they receive Jesus. He forgave sins. He promised them eternal life. That's a lot, isn't it? (LTA) Jesus loves us so much that he wants us to have the best of himself.
Thank you for sharing this snack with me and also for sharing this mystery with me. Maybe some day Jesus will help us understand how it happens. Wouldn't that be great? (LTA)
