What A Sign!

LECTIONARY WORSHIP AIDS
Series VII, Cycle A
Call To Worship (based on Isaiah 7:11 and 14)
One: Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.
All: Dare we ask? Dare we put the Lord to the test?
One: Dare we refuse the invitation from the Creator?
All: Behold, the virgin is with child and bears a son!
Collect
A sign, Lord, we pray for a sign, and this day you have given it to us - the virgin bears a son and he is Immanuel, God With Us! You are with us! Hallelujah. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We confess today the glorious news that your scriptures are fulfilled in the real world, that what was foretold has come to pass, both in the past and again in the present. As we look to the future that you have planned, we proclaim your goodness and mercy to a world that is weary and ready for renewal. Amen.
Hymns
"Hark! The Herald Angels Sing"
"Lo, How A Rose E'er Blooming"
"The Virgin Mary Had A Baby Boy"
Fourth Sunday Of Advent
Second Lesson: Romans 1:1-7
Theme: Called To Be Apostles
Call To Worship (Psalm 80:3-7)
One: Restore us, O God; let your face shine, that we may be saved.
All: O Lord God of hosts, how long will you be angry with your people's prayers?
One: You have fed them with the bread of tears, and given them tears to drink in full measure.
All: You make us the scorn of our neighbors; our enemies laugh among themselves.
One and All: Restore us, O God of hosts; let your face shine, that we may be saved.
Collect (based on Romans 1:1-7)
Today, God who calls us all to be apostles, we remember how your Son was promised beforehand through your prophets in the holy scriptures, and was declared to be Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness by resurrection from the dead. It is through Jesus Christ our Lord that we have received a commission to be apostles. We pray that your grace and peace will live richly among us as your worshiping people! Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, in the presence of your glorious good news, fashioned in the deeps of time, nurtured by you even in the face of human sin, and fulfilled in your time with the birth of your Son, we confess that only our own refusal to accept your forgivness and new life can stand in the way of this glorious story you are writing in our lives. This day of all days we pledge to be your witness people, forgiven and forgiving. Amen.
Hymns
"Holy Manna"
"God Sent His Son"
"New Earth, Heavens New"
Fourth Sunday Of Advent
Gospel Lesson: Matthew 1:18-25
Theme: Name Him Jesus
Call To Worship (Isaiah 7:14)
(Unison) Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel.
Collect
Heavenly Father, you told Joseph to name him Jesus, the one who saves, the one who delivers your people. Save us, deliver us, as we also name your Son Jesus, the Lord of our lives! Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, with our gifts of our material wealth we also pledge this day that our hearts and minds will dwell with you these holy hours of your holy day. We will do for others things even greater than we would have them do for us. We will love you, O Lord our God, with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our might. We will work for your kingdom as we work for others. And we shall recognize in ourselves the unique gifts of the Spirit that you have given into our keeping in stewardship. Bless us now and forevermore. Amen.
Hymns
"To Us A Child Of Hope Is Born"
"Good Christian Friends, Rejoice"
"The Virgin Mary Had A Baby Boy"
