We want to know
Children's sermon
Object:
An empty, child-proof medicine bottle and an exit sign
Good morning! This morning I brought a medicine bottle with
me. Probably all of you have these medicine bottles at home and
they are probably in a place that is hard to reach. That is on
purpose. Why do you suppose parents put things like medicine
bottles in hard-to-reach places? (Let them answer.) To keep them
out of reach of very young children. Very young children
sometimes put anything in their mouths, and many medicines can be
very harmful and dangerous to people who don't know what the
medicine is or how much to take or who can take it. Before a
person can use a medicine, that person must know what it is and
why he or she is taking the medicine. A person must be informed.
To further help protect people, most medicines now have "child-
proof" caps so that you also must know how to open such a bottle.
This further protects young children. It is very important to
know what medicine is used for -- otherwise it can be very
dangerous.
We have a sign in this church that is important. Can you tell me what the sign is? I'll give you one hint: it's lighted. (Let them answer.) The "Exit" signs are posted all around the church and most public buildings. Why? (Let them answer.) Exit signs tell us how we can leave the building if there is danger. We know right where to go and which doors to pass through to get outside. It is important to know where the exits are in a building. It helps protect us in possible times of danger.
All the things that I've mentioned so far are about the importance of knowing. Before one takes medicine, it is important to know what it is and what its use is. Exit signs help us know where we can get out of a building.
There's one more thing that is very important to know. It is extremely important to know about our Christian faith. That is one reason why we come to Sunday school and worship. That is why we read the Bible and learn Bible stories. We need to know about our faith. As the apostle Paul said to the Thessalonians: "We do not want you to be uninformed ..." In other words, "We want you to know all about Jesus and faith in him." I'm glad we have good ways to know about God.
Dear God: Help us always learn and keep learning the important things of life. Amen.
