What A Change!
Children's sermon
From a Mustard Seed
Children's Sermons
Object:
A selection of dried ingredients that become food products with the addition of water: Jello, potato buds, bouillon cubes, a package of dried soup mix. Samples should be in unmarked, clear plastic bags.
Message: Have you ever noticed how many different things it takes for your moms and dads to make a big meal? When I go in the kitchen at home, I am always amazed. There are spices, and packages of ingredients, and cans of soups, and other things. All of them can be mixed together to make the great food that your parents prepare for you.
If you stay in the kitchen you will notice that sometimes you don't have to work quite that hard all the time to make something good. Sometimes all you have to do is to add water to something and it becomes a food that we enjoy eating. In fact, today I brought along a number of samples of those kinds of foods. I want you to take a good close look at each of these and tell me what you think they will become when the water is added. (Show the sample bags one at a time and allow the children to speculate on what each one will become. Give the correct answers when they have finished guessing.)
Some of those were pretty hard to guess weren't they? Can you believe they turn from this (show bags again) to something we eat! Now let me ask you something else about them. Do you think we can turn them back again? After the water is added and all the necessary preparations are completed, could we change them back to what you see here? No, we can't do that. Once the change occurs, they have become something new.
The Bible tells us that is also true with our lives as Christians. When we know Jesus in our hearts, and begin to follow Him, we are no longer the same people we were before. Jesus starts to work within us to change us day by day so that we become more and more like Him. That is what is so exciting about being a Christian! God always has something more in store for us in knowing and following His Son!
