The book of Deuteronomy records an interesting provision for a rite of expiation in case of an unsolved murder. It provides that when a man is found murdered in the open country and the murderer is unknown, the elders in the nearest town are responsible for conducting a rite of expiation. A heifer that has never been used for work is to be killed in an uncultivated valley where there is running water.
