An Understanding Mind

Series V, Cycle B
Call To Worship
"Ask what I should give you," God invited young King Solomon in a dream. Solomon asked God to give him an understanding mind able to discern good from evil. What one thing would you ask God to give you? God also gave Solomon something he had not asked for. What unrequested gift do you suppose God might give you that you also need?
Collect
At your invitation, O God, we ponder what is most important to us. In your generosity, you give us support and encouragement beyond our requests. We come to you with hearts filled with gratitude. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
In our haste, we may wish for or ask for the wrong things, Holy Parent. Help us to focus on cultivating the enduring qualities that will sustain us throughout our lives. Encourage us to trust that you will meet our needs. Amen.

"Praise The Source Of Faith And Learning" Tune: PROCESSION
"Grant Us Wisdom To Perceive You" Tune: QUEM PASTORES

Second Lesson: Ephesians 5:15-20
Theme: Spirit Of Wisdom
Call To Worship
Leader: We are responsible for how we live. We are the makers and managers of our decisions. Come, let us take care to live as wisely and with as great understanding as possible.
People: We give thanks to God for all that God gives us in the name of Jesus the Christ and through the Holy Spirit.
Collect
Hear our prayer, O spirit-living God, that your presence will come to us as wisdom and that our response to you will bring an inner song to our heart. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Dear God, we have already wasted more time than we want to admit. We pray not only for ourselves but particularly for the younger ones among us that they might gain early wisdom to realize that decisions made now will determine the physical, mental, and spiritual quality of their remaining life. Guide us all as wisdom, O God. Amen.
50B Hymns
"Come, Holy Spirit, Heavenly Dove" Tune: ST. AGNES
"Spirit Of The Living God" Tune: IVERSON
"Be [Now] [Thou] My Vision" or "Christ Be My Leader" Tune: SLANE
Proper 15
Sunday between August 14 and August 20 inclusive
Gospel: John 6:51-58
Theme: Unless
Call To Worship
Leader: Unless we eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, we will have no life in us.
People: Unless we accept what Jesus offers us freely, we will have no lasting life within us.
Leader: Unless we recognize the sacrifice of life Jesus made for our well-being, we will be without the life of the spirit that endures.
People: When we take the spiritual nourishment that God provides through Christ, we gain eternal life.
Collect
Our physical and spiritual energy comes from you, O God. Jesus gave up his life so our world might become a better place. We would live as people who have taken on the life of Christ so we might bring positive, nourishing energy to the world around us. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Sometimes, O God, we only go through the motions of receiving the elements of holy communion. Let us see afresh that each time we drink the juice and eat the bread with faith you transform us, make us new, and remind us again of the eternal life of the spirit that is ours through your loving Spirit. Amen.
50B Hymns
"O The Depth Of Love Divine" Tune: STOOKEY
"Bread Of The World" Tune: EUCHARISTIC HYMN
"Deck Thyself, My Soul, With Gladness," "Deck Thyself With Love," or "Graced With Garments Of Great Gladness" Tune: SCHM†CKE DICH
