Call To Worship
Leader: It is good to sing praise to our God.
People: It is pleasant and right to praise him.
Leader: He heals the brokenhearted.
People: His wisdom cannot be measured.
All: Praise the Lord!
Collect
Lord, we come to you in this time of worship weary and worn from our struggles during the week. We are weak and heavy-laden, and we feel powerless against the forces of evil that confront us. We wait upon you now, O God whose understanding is unsearchable, and ask that you will renew our strength, enabling us to mount up with wings like eagles, to run and not be weary, to walk and not faint as we go forth once again to confront the powers of darkness with the Light of the World shining in our hearts. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
O God, often we are overwhelmed with self-pity. Confronted by trials and temptations we say you do not know what we are enduring, and that you have turned a deaf ear to our pleas for help. Forgive our lack of faith, we pray, and in this time together help us to regain our faith and confidence in your abiding presence. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Hymns
"Wellspring Of Wisdom"
"Be Still, My Soul"
Fifth Sunday After Epiphany
Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 9:16-23
Theme: All Things To All People -- Why?
Call To Worship
Leader: Great and mighty is our Lord.
People: His wisdom cannot be measured.
Leader: Sing hymns of praise to the Lord.
People: He takes pleasure in those who honor him, in those who trust in his constant love.
Collect
God, you have entrusted each of us with the task of witnessing to the Good News of your eternal love shown to us through your Son, Jesus Christ. In this time of worship give us a new understanding of what it means to be all things to all people so that some of them may come to know you and your great love. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Almighty God, we are so self-satisfied, yet in our better moments we realize how arrogant we must appear to you. We witnessed to your great love, and from time to time, others are persuaded to accept your love. When this happens we pat ourselves on the back and say we have done a good job. Forgive our presumptions, Lord, and help us to realize that it is not of our own power but only by your Spirit working through us that we are able to be all things to all people for the sake of the gospel. Amen.
Hymns
"O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing"
"I Love To Tell The Story"
Fifth Sunday After Epiphany
Gospel Lesson: Mark 1:29-39
Theme: Power Of The Good News
Call To Worship
When we let Jesus into our lives and into our homes we open ourselves to the healing power of God. In this time of worship draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.
Collect
Lord, help us in this time of worship to permit love to bring us newness of life. Just as the morning sun brings its warmth and fullness of life, so may your love come to bring a sense of refreshment and newness to each one of us. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Heavenly Father, as we humbly seek your presence we come before you confessing our sins of commission and omission. Come with your healing presence, and according to your promise grant us your forgiveness. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Hymns
"Amazing Grace"
"Because He Lives"
