There was once a trombone player who became too ill to march in a parade. The band director prevailed on a friend to march in the sick man's place and to fake playing the trombone.
Someone knew that friend, saw him in the parade, and later said to him: "Bill, I didn't know that you could toot on a trombone."
Bill answered him, "I was a substitoot!"
