Sermons on the Second Readings
Series II, Cycle B
Today, Easter is the central festival of the church, out of which comes two derivative festivals, Christmas and Pentecost. Christmas yearns for Easter and the ability to trust that violence and contingency do not have the last word, and the empowerment of Pentecost comes only after Easter's victory is already in place. Of course in our economy, Christmas has something of a popular edge because it is more marketable, and Pentecost comes and goes in churches high and low without fanfare. In an earlier time, one British pastor got it right.
