THERE ARE THOSE who would say that the 1930s and 1940s were not good years in which to live, much less in which to grow. Those were the days of breadlines, the WPA, the CCC, the growing shadow of Adolph Hitler, and the incessant chatter of gangsterism's guns. In the city where I grew up, all of these had an influence on me and contributed to the memories I have of those years. But other memories are far more vivid and more indicative of youth's concern and interests, regardless of surrounding events, however inauspicious they might have been.
