The threshold of the Kingdom
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Cycle B
Gospel Note:
Neither the singling out of a commandment nor the juxtaposing
of the love of God and love of neighbor was new to rabbinic
teaching in Jesus' day, though Jesus' connection between the two
may have been a bit more radical than usual. What is important
here is Jesus' assertion that the scribe's knowing the importance
of these two had brought him to the very threshold of God's
Kingdom. Presumably, the doing of them (through grace) would have
brought him into it.
Liturgical Color:
Green
