Theme: For Such A Time As This

Lectionary Worship Aids
Series VII, Cycle B
Call To Worship
Okay, God's people. Let's get this straight. Esther wins a beauty pageant and that qualifies her to save her people? That's it? Maybe this servanthood thing isn't going to be as hard as we thought? Right? Or could it be that each of us is called for such a time as this?
Collect (Psalm 124:8)
Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Before we claim too much credit, God who moves in secret and silent ways, we confess that if it had not been for you we would have been swallowed by our adversaries, our problems, and the sins of this world. Thank you for your presence, your guidance, your perseverance in finding us and saving us! Amen.
Hymns
Seek Ye First
Softly And Tenderly Jesus Is Calling
Obey My Voice
Proper 21 / Ordinary Time 26
Sunday between September 25 and October 1 inclusive
Second Lesson: James 5:13-20
Theme: Healing And Curing
Call To Worship
Hear, O God's people, our God is a hearing God, a God who answers prayer. Come boldly before God's throne to praise and pray!
Collect
Hearing God, the great I AM, we trust you not only with our petitions, but with your freedom to answer as you choose. We accept your invitation to speak boldly, requesting our daily bread, and joyfully trust you to answer, "Yes," "No," "Maybe," or some other answer altogether. We praise you most of all because you are, always were, and always will be. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
God unknowable, yet somehow friend, Lord of majesty yet tender parent, we come before you with song and sorrow. We anoint each other, not out of a sense of controlling you, but inviting ourselves to again in union with you seek your will for our lives together. Raise us up. Forgive us our sins. Amen.

Gospel Lesson: Mark 9:38-50

Call To Worship
One:
God's kingdom will come in a perfect future.
All:
God's will shall be done in a perfect time.
One:
God reigns now, and his kingdom is perfectly in our midst.
All:
May God's will be our will in all we do.
One:
Let us seek this kingdom, and God's righteousness, that all things may be added to us.
All:
Let the peace of God dwell richly in us today and always.
Collect
Lord, grant us peace. Lord, grant us the courage to grasp peace. Lord, grant us the strength to become your peace. You have called us for such a time as this. We respond, not only with our presence here at worship, but our belief in you that sustains us all the days of our week. God of glory, our hearts long for your kingdom. Let your will done in our lives as your people. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, we will not speak evil of other believers. There are so many cups of cold water to be handed over to trembling hands that we dare not waste time in foolish controversies, in puffing ourselves up over what we imagine is our superiority in your eyes. Lord, your eyes are upon the suffering. We will look in that direction as well -- and perhaps see ourselves in the process. Amen.
