Call To Worship (Isaiah 9:2 and 6)
One:
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness -- on them light has shined.
All:
For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Collect
This day, Lord, you reveal to us once again, in the eyes of our children, in the hopes of our adults, in the wisdom of our seniors, that the word is continually made flesh to dwell among us. Your light shines in our midst. Grant us the grace to see it, perceive it, and celebrate it! All glory is yours, now and forever. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
What can we offer you today, Lord, that can match the gift of the Christ Child? Accept our gifts which we give as freely as you gave a light that shines in the darkness to a suffering world. Amen.
Hymns
Whilst By The Sheep We Watched By Night
O Little Town Of Bethlehem
'Twas In The Moon Of Wintertime
Christmas Eve
Second Lesson: Titus 2:11-14
Theme: Salvation By Grace, Salvation By All
Call To Worship (based on Titus 2:15)
Declare these things; exhort and reprove with all authority. Christ our Savior is born!
Collect (Psalm 96:9-13)
One:
Worship the Lord in holy splendor; tremble before him, all the earth.
All:
Say among the nations, "The Lord is king! The world is firmly established; it shall never be moved. He will judge the peoples with equity."
One:
Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
All:
let the field exult, and everything in it. Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord;
One:
for he is coming, for he is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with his truth. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Perfect Lord, you have planned our peace and wholeness in the midst of the world's adversity before the beginning of time. What can we do but accept your sweet gift? You alone are Lord. We pray that your will shall be fulfilled in our lives, and in the lives of all your people. Maran Atha. Come, Lord Jesus. Soon. Amen.
Hymns
O Come, All Ye Faithful
While All Around The Bells May Ring (see page 239)
On This Day Earth Shall Ring
Christmas Eve
Gospel Lesson: Luke 2:1-20
Theme: Perfect Planning, Perfect Peace
Call To Worship
One:
A Roman Emperor, a Palestinian teenager, the census, no room at the inn, the beginning of our salvation and the end of a long period of waiting -- for God, for God's people, and perhaps for ourselves.
All:
God's perfect planning brings perfect peace. This story has been told so often that perhaps we don't hear it clearly.
One:
We gather together to hear this story all over again for the first time.
Collect (Psalm 96:1-2)
One:
O sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.
All:
Sing to the Lord, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Sharpen our hearing, Lord, so we can hear again the cry of the infant. Open our eyes so we might see the star. Rouse us, Lord that we might stay awake for the arrival of the angels. Loosen our fists that we might freeIy give as we have freely received. Let our holiday become a holy day. Amen.
Hymns
Angels We Have Heard On High
Of The Father's Love Begotten
