A prayer that's often in our heart of hearts, if not in our
public utterances is, "O God, save me from the consequences of
evil, but not from the pleasures of indulgence." If we call up
the courage to be truthful about our inner feelings, it's not so
often our desire to be quit of our temptations, which we really
do find attractive, but rather, to be freed from the consequences
of caving in to those temptations. These consequences include
guilt feelings and self-recriminations, damaged relationships
