As a child psychologist, I have the privilege of meeting and speaking with a great many people. I work with children, adolescents, and their parents, but it is almost always some adult who has decided the child or teenager should see me. It is rarely the minor's initiative. And, because of where I have chosen to work, most of my clients are not only forced to see me, they are usually black as well. That is no small issue, given that I am white and solidly suburban in lifestyle. I am not, nor have I ever been, poor.
