Pastoral Prayers For All Seasons
Object:
O God, our Creator, we thank you for life -- the gift you have given each one of us. Help us to experience and give ourselves to those qualities of life that include love, mercy, and justice; and to resist the temptation of seeing life through our pain and sorrow, as deceitful and meaningless.
We confess that we often assume our interpretations of life are synonymous with truth. When someone has used us spitefully, we jump to the conclusion that all persons are self-centered and hateful. When someone deceives us, we are tempted to think that no one can be trusted. When goals we have set become as ashes under our feet, we assume that all of life is hollow, a chasing after the wind.
In our more reasonable moments, we admit that our viewpoints may be wrong. Then it is we see that some people live by trustworthy qualities, qualities that are positive, creative, and rock-like. A man contemplating suicide found in his daughter, reaching out to him, a significance that he couldn't ignore. That man grew in strength and wisdom. A lady despairing of her relationship with her husband, dared to believe in the love she first knew with him, and found it to be a key that opened the door to a renewed and uplifting relationship.
Grant, O God, that we will be able to endorse life in all its fullness. May we never -- out of fear or anger -- choose to hide behind negative responses to life that drive us away from ourselves, from each other, and from you. Undergird our faith that life is designed to bring its participants meaning and joy. Make us sensitive to your Son, who though he lost the life of his body, did not lose the life of his spirit. He received his strength from you and remained faithful to the end. So may we respond to you, this day and forever. Amen.
