Looking For The Holy Spirit
Children's sermon
Object:
A toy sailboat or a balloon or a photo of a wind turbine or photo of a hot air or gas balloon
When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, 'receive the Holy Spirit.' (v. 22)
Good morning, boys and girls. I am so happy to see you this morning. You know why I'm happy? I am happy because you are here at worship ? and I am really happy to tell you about something amazing! Are you ready to hear about it? (children answer)
There are some things in life that are invisible. But they are very real. For example, here in my hands I am holding some air. (cup hands like holding air) (shows air to children)
Can you see the air? (children answer “no”) But the air is still there isn't it?
There are people who say there is something called the wind. Can you see the wind! (children answer, “no”)
There are smart people who say there is something called electricity. Can you see electricity? (children answer, “no”)
So you see there are things in life that are invisible but very real. We just can't see them.
Before Jesus left the earth and his disciples, he said to the disciples, “I'm going to leave you a friend.” He said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”
Would they be able to see the Holy Spirit? (children answer “no”)
The Holy Spirit, like air, like the wind and like electricity, is invisible but we know the Holy Spirit is real. How? By what the Holy Spirit does. The Holy Spirit comforts us, corrects us and helps us pray. The Holy Spirit helps us understand the bible and church and life in general. Just like the wind that sails a boat or turns a wind turbine or lifts a balloon into the air.
You received the Holy Spirit when you were baptized. So the Holy Spirit is busy in your life right now. The Holy Spirit enables you to believe in God. Helps you in troubled times and in happy times. You receive the Holy Spirit every day because of Jesus' love and friendship with you.
Prayer: Holy Spirit come to us today and every day. Help us to believe. Amen.
