Location: Ezekiel 18:2
Verse: What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers [parents] have eaten sour grapes [sinned], and the children's teeth are set on edge?
A student enrolling in Psychology 101 will probably have a big discussion on rationalization in class. A person can rationalize by justifying or setting up a defense mechanism. If a person finds disparagement of something that has proven unattainable, the person will probably say, "Oh, I didn't want it anyway." That is sour grapes.
In the scripture above, "sour grapes" means sin. The people of Judah believed that they were being punished for the sins of their ancestors. The prophet Ezekiel helped to set them straight on this matter.
God judges each person individually. We often suffer from the effects of sins committed by those who came before us. But each person will receive personal judgment for each person's personal conduct.
