BILL: (ENTERS WITH MARY BETH AND THEY SIT AT A SMALL TABLE IN A NICE RESTAURANT) I'm so hungry.
MARY BETH: Me, too. What are you going to have?
BILL: I don't know. I'm ready to celebrate. I know that.
MARY BETH: I thought we might have some champagne.
BILL: Right. Champagne it shall be. Where's the waiter?
MARY BETH: I've been looking forward to this all week.
BILL: Me, too. Married two years. (WITH A TWINKLE IN HIS EYE) Did you think it would last that long?
MARY BETH: I knew it would.
BILL: I love you more now than I ever did.
MARY BETH: I was thinking the same thing.
BILL: You were? (THEY HOLD HANDS AND GIGGLE)
JESUS: (ENTERS. HANDING THEM MENUS) Good evening, my name is Jesus and I'll be your waiter tonight.
BILL: Jesus?
JESUS: Yes?
BILL: The Jesus?
JESUS: The very one. Would you like to begin with cocktails?
(THE NEXT TWO LINES ARE SPOKEN SIMULTANEOUSLY)
BILL: No.
MARY BETH: Yes.
BILL: Cocktails? Uh, no. No, thanks. I think we'll just have ...
JESUS: May I suggest the water?
BILL: Yes, water. Great.
JESUS: I'll bring you some living water.
BILL: Yes, living water. That sounds good.
MARY BETH: Yes, I guess so, living water.
JESUS: Well, I'll just get that for you while you look over the menu. (EXITS)
MARY BETH: What's "living water"?
BILL: I don't know. But it's got to be better than the city water. Maybe it's distilled or something. (LOOKING OVER MENU) What looks good to you?
MARY BETH: I was looking forward to champagne.
BILL: Me too, but you know, this is the real Jesus.
MARY BETH: I know. That's what he said. What are you having?
BILL: I don't know. This is kind of a limited menu.
JESUS: (ENTERS WITH TWO GLASSES OF WATER) There we go. Two living waters.
BILL: Thank you. Now, about this menu.
JESUS: We serve the very best -- true food and true drink.
BILL: If you're really Jesus -- the real Jesus ...
JESUS: I am.
BILL: Then what are you doing here, in a restaurant?
JESUS: It's my place.
MARY BETH: Oh, that's nice.
BILL: Nice place.
MARY BETH: (REFERRING TO MENU) What exactly is this "Adonai special"?
JESUS: Well, I begin with a fresh loaf of bread.
MARY BETH: Mmm. Fresh bread.
JESUS: Yes, the bread of life.
BILL: Bread of life?
JESUS: I am the bread of life.
BILL: You are.
JESUS: Yes. I came down from Heaven. If you partake of the bread you will live forever.
MARY BETH: Came down from ...
JESUS: Heaven.
MARY BETH: Yes.
JESUS: If you want to live ...
BILL: Look, Jesus, we came here ...
JESUS: No one comes here unless the Father draws him.
MARY BETH: I did feel we should come here for our anniversary.
BILL: Did you know we've been married ...
JESUS: Two years, one hour, and, let's see, thirteen minutes.
BILL: You do know.
JESUS: I was there.
MARY BETH: Oh, I don't remember ...
JESUS: Well, would you like the Adonai special?
BILL: I guess so, since it's the only thing on the menu.
MARY BETH: What is it?
JESUS: Lamb.
MARY BETH: And how is it prepared?
JESUS: I prepare it exactly to your taste.
MARY BETH: I like lamb, if it's good.
JESUS: This is perfect. The lamb of God.
BILL: This wouldn't be, by any chance ...
JESUS: It is. I am the lamb of God.
MARY BETH: You are? But I thought you were the bread of life.
JESUS: I am -- both.
BILL: Look, Jesus, this is getting to be a bit much.
JESUS: The Father sent me.
BILL: The Father?
JESUS: The Father. I live because of the Father. If you partake of the lamb you will live forever.
BILL: Wait just a minute.
JESUS: Does this cause you to stumble?
BILL: Well ...
JESUS: You won't understand everything on the menu. Are you interested?
MARY BETH: I wanted something special for our anniversary.
JESUS: This is special.
BILL: Well, why not.
MARY BETH: Good. Let's have the Lamb of God.
BILL: And begin with the Bread of Life.
JESUS: Now, to begin, may I suggest a drink.
BILL: I'm almost afraid to ask.
JESUS: My blood. It's the only way you can truly abide in me.
BILL: Well, what do you think?
MARY BETH: Oh, yes. After all, it's our anniversary.
JESUS: Good choice. (EXITS)
