It was startling news to Rip Van Winkle to find out he was awakening to a new era in American life.
He had drunk too much that night before. It seemed so long ago. Why, of course, it was long ago. Many years had passed. Before that fateful night Rip was living in a New England colony that constantly spoke of King George of England as the tyrant who exacted taxes on them.
As Rip Van Winkle moved about in the colony he was hearing about another "George." Who was he? He was George Washington, the first President of the U.S.A.
