Signs Of The Kingdom

Matthew To Revelation
Object: some signs that note only one mile from your town like "Boston, 1 Mile" and a sign that reads "Kingdom Of God, Very Close"
Good morning, boys and girls. When you ride in car, do you read the signs along the side of the road that tell you how far it is to the next town? Sometimes the sign may say "Indianapolis, 50 Miles" or "St. Louis, 120 Miles." Those kinds of signs are nice because they tell you how far you have yet to go. But the signs I like to read are the ones that tell me something like this: "Boston, 1 Mile." To me that means that I am very close to home. It will only be a minute or so until I am in my hometown. It is good to get home. That is where I eat best, sleep best, and play best. I like home, and I like to be close to it when I am not there. We all like to get back home, for it makes us feel good.
I guess the only sign that could make me feel better than the one that I have just shown you is the next one that I am going to show you. Suppose that you saw a sign that said, "Kingdom of God, Very Close." How would that make you feel? (let them answer) That would mean that you were very close to heaven, wouldn't it? (let them answer) It sure would! If we see a sign that says the kingdom of God is only one mile away, it would mean that we have understood a lot of things that Jesus had taught, and that we had believed them. It would also mean that we were soon to see Jesus and his Father and all of the other believers. What a wonderful feeling that would be. It would be better than any homecoming that we ever knew because this is what we pray for every day of our lives.
A long time ago a very religious man asked Jesus a lot of questions and Jesus answered them. Jesus also asked him a question and the same man answered it in the way that Jesus wanted him to answer it. When he told Jesus the answer, Jesus said that he was very close to the kingdom of God. He now only had the answer, but he also believed in the answer that he gave. You and I are very close to the kingdom of God. It is only a little while until we see it, even though we are living in it right now.
You may see some road signs that tell you that you are close to home. "Boston, 1 Mile" means a lot to me and to you too, but the best sign of all will be the one that will tell us we are soon to be with God our Father and his Son Jesus Christ. That will be quite a day, one that all of us will enjoy more than any other.
