Call To Worship
Leader: The way to become wise is to honor the Lord;
People: he gives sound judgment to all who obey his commands.
All: He is to be praised forever.
Collect
Lord, like Solomon of old we, too, pray for wisdom to know the difference between good and evil. You have blessed us in many ways, and we are grateful. We want to please you and walk in your ways, but we are weak and need your help. Grant us this wisdom, we pray, in Jesus' name. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
O God, we pray for wisdom, but then we lack the determination and self-discipline to pursue it. Help us, Lord, to grow in wisdom by prayer, study, and worship even as your Son did, in whose name we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"God Of Grace And God Of Glory"
"Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise"
Proper 15/Ordinary Time 20
Sunday between August 14 and August 20 inclusive
Second Lesson: Ephesians 5:15-20
Theme: Living As Wise People
Call To Worship
Leader: With all my heart I will thank the Lord.
People: How wonderful are the things the Lord does!
Leader: The Lord is full of honor and majesty; his righteousness is eternal.
People: In all he does he is faithful and just; all his commands are dependable.
Collect
We come to you this morning, Lord, to give you thanks and praise. We know that these are troublesome times because your voice goes unheeded, and we live like ignorant people ignoring your commands. Enlighten us by your Holy Spirit that we might know your will. By the same Holy spirit light a fire within us that we may go forth to testify to your love. We pray in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Heavenly Father, we have wasted a great deal of time when we should have been serving you. We are not lazy, just thoughtless and irresponsible. Grant us the wisdom we need, Lord, to know your will and to do it. Amen.
Hymns
"Spirit Of The Living God"
"Be Thou My Vision"
Proper 15/Ordinary Time 20
Sunday between August 14 and August 20 inclusive
Gospel Lesson: John 6:51-58
Theme: The Bread Of Eternal Life
Call To Worship
Leader: What are you doing here?
People: We have come searching for the key to eternal life.
Leader: Jesus said: "I am the living bread. If you eat this bread you will live forever."
People: How can we eat Jesus?
Leader: Accept the fact that Jesus died to bring us the love of God, and God raised him from death to life to show us that the Spirit is eternal.
People: We would let Jesus into our lives. Thanks be to God!
Collect
Praise be to you, O God, for the gift of your Son, for the promise of eternal life, and for the indwelling Spirit of your love. Help us to live as those who have taken on the life of Christ that we might demonstrate your love to the world. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
O God, help us to love you more fully, to serve you more eagerly, and to worship you more sincerely. Too often the world turns away from you because of what they see in us who call ourselves by your name. Forgive us, Lord, and enable us to demonstrate your light and your love in all that we do. Amen.
Hymns
"O The Depth Of Love Divine"
"Deck Thyself, My Soul, With Gladness"
