Second Sunday In Advent
First Lesson: Isaiah 40:1-11
Theme: "Here Is Your God"
Call To Worship
Leader: Here is your God. Hear God's comfort in your life:
People: Every valley shall be lifted up.
Leader: Hear the energy of God:
People: Every mountain and hill shall be made low.
Leader: Hear the strength of God:
People: The uneven ground shall become level.
Leader: Hear the persistence of God:
People: The rough places shall become a plain.
Collect
O God of tenderness and compassion, our anxieties melt with Isaiah's comforting words. As the shepherd gathers and carries the lambs close to the heart, so does your love embrace us. As the shepherd gently leads the mother sheep, you also guide us around obstacles so we may lead others in your name. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Our power and our might threaten to turn into control, God. Our tenderness and our compassion become packed with worthless emotion. Teach us, O God, to marry strength with gentleness so our actions will show your presence in our lives. Amen.
02B Hymns
"Come, [O][Thou] Long-Expected Jesus" Tune: HYFRYDOL
"Comfort, Comfort, [O][These][Ye] My People" Tune: FREU DICH SEHR or PSALM 42
"Now Bless The God Of Israel" Tune: FOREST GREEN
Second Sunday In Advent
Second Lesson: 2 Peter 3:8-15a
Theme: While You Wait
Call To Worship
God is waiting to come to us. We are waiting for God to enter our lives. How shall we live while we wait for the world to change? What can we do? How shall we be? Come, let us worship God as we wait for the new.
Collect
No wonder joy bursts out at Christmas, O God, when you, who waits for us to be ready, meet our readiness to receive you. No wonder peace dazes chaos at Christmas. No wonder hope shows its hardy self. To this we say, Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
How will you find us, O God, when you come into our lives? Will you find us waiting passively, waiting for you to do all the work? Will you find us active waiters, preparing the ground and making ready? Will you find us frittering away costly time? Will you find us at peace? Amen.
02B Hymns
"Lift Up Your Heads, [O][Ye] Mighty Gates" Tune: MACHT HOCH DIE T†R, MILWAUKEE, or TRURO
"All Earth Is Waiting" Tune: SEDONA or TAULƒ
"In The Bleak Midwinter" Tune: CRANHAM
Second Sunday In Advent
Gospel: Mark 1:1-8
Theme: John
Call To Worship
Who is the voice in your wilderness? How do you prepare the way for Christ to enter your life? What is the message you give others by the way you live? These are the questions we bring to worship this second Sunday in Advent as we prepare for Jesus' birth.
Collect
We come, O God, to hear your voice. Let your voice be a beacon of radar that quiets the channel-flitting restlessness in our souls that keeps us from hearing you and recognizing you in our midst. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Guide us, Holy Parent, as we appraise the plethora of daily choices that deluge us. Give us clarity of purpose. Help our hearts to be clean. Give us the courage to find our own voices and then to speak out the words that will make a difference to those we care about. Through our Savior, Jesus. Amen.
02B Hymns
"Of The [Father's Love][Parent's Heart] Begotten" Tune: DIVINUM MYSTERIUM
"There's A Voice In The Wilderness" Tune: ASCENSION
"The First Nowell" Tune: THE FIRST NOWELL
