Call to Worship
Leader: Blessed be the God of Israel, who alone does wondrous things.
People: Blessed be God's glorious name forever - may glory fill the whole earth. We come together in hope as we prepare for the coming of our Savior.
Leader: Welcome one another, therefore; just as Christ welcomes you. (Passing of the Peace.)
Lighting of the Advent Wreath Candle (Hope, Righteousness)
(Choose a family or singles from the congregation. The first candle should be lit before the service)
Voice 1: Hope of the world, God's gift from highest heaven, bringing to hungry souls the bread of life, still let thy spirit unto us be given to heal earth's wounds and end our bitter strife. (Verse 2 of Hope of the World by Georgia Harkness, 1954)
Voice 2: On this second Sunday in Advent, we light the candle of hope. When we are lost in the darkness, any flicker of light gives us hope. Perhaps we can find our way out of the darkness. Then we can move through the unknown into a new way of being.
Voice 3: (Lights the candle) As we light the candle of hope, our thoughts turn to a dark night in Bethlehem centuries ago when a despairing world waited in hope for the light of the world to be born. May we, like the shepherds and Magi, abound in hope and peace.
(Congregation sings Song Of Hope)
Scripture Reading (Creative interpretation of Isaiah 11:1--10, including the Prayer of Confession and Assurance of Pardon)
(Have a stool covered in brown cloth or paper to look like a tree trunk sitting on the chancel - tall enough for a person to crouch behind it. Voice 1 and 2 are crouched behind stool)
Voice 1: (Stands) A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse,
Voice 2: (Stands, sticks head out around the first person) and a branch shall grow out of his roots. (Stands beside Voice 1)
Voice 3: (Enters from off stage and stands behind Voices 1 and 2) The Spirit of the Lord shall rest on him (Rests one hand on shoulder of Voice 1), the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might (Rests other hand on shoulder of Voice 2) the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. (Moves between Voices 1 and 2)
Voice 4: (Joins other three) His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear,
Voice 5: (Joins) but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
Voice 6: (Joins) he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.
Voice 7: (Joins) Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist, and faithfulness the belt around his loins.
All: The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them.
Voice 1: Please join us now in the unison Prayer of Confession.
(As the Assurance of Pardon is read, the children's choir, in animal costumes, comes forward)
Prayer of Confession
The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard lie down with a baby goat, a calf and a lion together? We're sorry, God, but we really have trouble believing that. A little child shall lead us? Even as we prepare for the coming of the Christ child, hatred and warmongering are all around us. We want to believe that your creatures can live peaceably together, but we feel no peace in our own hearts. God, grant us hope for a new world order. Let it start here, today. Give us resolve; give us hope.
(Continue in silence for individual prayer and reflection)
Assurance of Pardon (Pastor)
A shoot will come out from the stump of Jesse and a branch shall grow out of his root. That branch gives us hope. Through Christ our Redeemer we can have hope. Christ became a servant on behalf of the truth of God to confirm the promises given to the Israelites. Live free in the promise of Christ.
(Children now sing The Lion and the Lamb by Natalie Sleeth)
Voices 1 through 7: The cow and the bear shall graze, their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. (Family with a baby and small child now come forward and walk across in front of the group) The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder's den. (Children's choir and family leave) They will not hurt or destroy on all my mountain; for the earth will be as full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.
(Voices 3 through 7 leave)
Voices 1 and 2: (Representing the stump and the root, they stand behind the trunk of the tree with hands out) On that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious. Amen. (Exit the chancel area)
Benediction
Leader: May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus.
People: The root of Jesse shall come: the one who rises to rule - in him we shall hope.
Leader: May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
People: We go out in hope! Amen.
