SYMBOLS OF SACRIFICE
Year 3, Lenten Congregational Resources
Atonement is the Christian word for what the Hebrew Scriptures
call sacrifice. From earliest records up until a few years after
the death of Jesus, Hebrews participated in the sacrifice of
animals as part of their worship experience. Such sacrifices were
attempts to relate the worshiper with God. In some cases it was
thought that sacrifices gave sustenance to God, in others enabled
communion with God and, of course, sometimes simply expressed
gratitude in the form of a gift.
In the New Testament it has been the sacrifice of Jesus Christ
