It has become customary to speak of our time as a secular age. The word secular suggests "this age" or "the present time" or "this world" as opposed to the next age or the world to come. Western culture, we are told, has centered its energies and concerns on the issues of the present life in the present world. People of our day are preoccupied with the concerns of the material, temporal world in place of serious interest in the spiritual, eternal world.
