There's a Canadian sign at a rural crossroads: "Be careful
which rut you get into. You'll be in it for the next 20 miles."
Being in a rut has negative connotations. But the flip side of
the rut can be a football game with no goal lines, or a
basketball game with no boundaries. If we have no parameters to
our lives we find ourselves going about in circles with no
ability to win or accomplish or conclude our journey. As the old
saw puts it: "It is so soon I am done for, I wonder what I was
