Great Things from Small Offerings
Children's sermon
Object:
a church offering plate
The Point: Jesus wants us to work together to spread the kingdom of God.
The Lesson: Thank you, boys and girls, for joining me during this time of sharing. Do you know what this is? (let children answer) You see this offering plate passed around every time we gather to worship. What do our members place in the offering plate? (let children answer) For what is the offering used? (let children answer) The offering announces that our members are working together to help spread the good news of the kingdom of God. Together we encourage each other's faith. Together we provide the supplies we need for Sunday school and ministry. Together we reach out to help others who need support like food and clothing. Together we support missionaries to other countries.
We are not the first to work together. Matthew tells about a time when Jesus spent a whole day teaching a lot of people about the kingdom of God. At the end of the day the disciples came to Jesus and said that he should send everyone home so that they could find something to eat. But Jesus said, "No, together we can take care of all their needs." Then with a simple offering of bread and two small fish and with Jesus' blessing -- working together -- lots and lots of people were fed. They offered what they had and Jesus did the rest.
Each of you are important to our effort to help spread God's kingdom. When you come to Sunday school and worship, you offer your time. You encourage your friends to come as well.
Jesus wants us all to offer what we can. After all it isn't about what we give; it is about what Jesus will do with what we offer. He feeds thousands and blesses many.
With you and with all of us... together with Jesus the kingdom of God will grow.
Closing Prayer: Jesus, bless our children and us so that together we will come to experience your great love. Together with you, Jesus, great things will happen. Amen.
