The Rejected Drug
Sermon
An Idle Tale Becomes Good News
Messages On Lent And Easter Themes
"They offered him wine mixed with myrrh." It was a drug, provided by kind women, maybe the same ones who wept as they followed him to Golgotha. This must have seemed to them a thoughtful and merciful thing to do. One of their proverbs said, "Give strong drink to one who is perishing, and wine to those in bitter distress; let them drink and forget their poverty, and remember their misery no more" (Proverbs 31:6-7). This would ease Jesus' pain at least a little and make his torture more bearable. Gratitude surely welled up in Jesus' heart because of this.
