Lectionary Worship Aids
Series VI, Cycle C
Theme: The New Covenant
Call To Worship
Leader: The judgments of the Lord are just; they are always fair.
People: They are more desirable than the finest gold, sweeter than the finest honey.
Leader: They give knowledge to me, your servant.
People: I am rewarded for obeying them.
Leader: Come, let us worship the Lord of the Church.
Collect
O Lord Jesus Christ, you founded the Church that it may continue your work of bringing all people to yourself. Make clear to each of us our part in the task. Grant to your Church a vision of a more perfect society here on earth in which justice and right, peace and goodwill shall reign, and your will may be done on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
O God, while we pray for peace on earth, we find it difficult to forgive our enemies and even to live in harmony with those close to us. Fill us with your Holy Spirit that we may truly become new persons willing and eager to live according to your laws. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
Almighty God, we not only pray for the day when all persons recognize you as Lord of their lives, but we bring these offerings that they as well as those who present them may be used by you to that end. Amen.
Hymns
"Father, We Praise Thee"
"Come, Christians, Join To Sing"
"Glorious Things Of Thee Are Spoken"
Reformation Sunday
Second Lesson: Romans 3:19-28
Theme: We Are Put Right With God By Faith
Call To Worship
God sent his Son into the world that the world might be reconciled to him. We are put right with God by faith in his Son, and not by keeping the Laws of Moses and the Prophets.
Come, let us worship God revealed to us by Jesus Christ.
Collect
Almighty God, whose Son, Jesus Christ, walked and worked among us to show your love and concern for all humanity, kindle in us a burning zeal that the light of your Church may shine bright and clear to illuminate the path for all people to find their way home to your abiding presence. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Heavenly Father, forgive us when we have tried to earn your favor by strict adherence to the letter of your Laws. Create in us clean hearts and pure motives that we, living by faith in you, may show by our words and deeds that we truly love you. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
Almighty God, we know that rituals are not enough to show our love, our thanks, and our dedication to you. Therefore, we bring these gifts and with them we offer ourselves for the work of your Church. Amen.
Hymns
"Faith Of Our Fathers"
"Give Me The Wings Of Faith"
"One Holy Church Of God Appears"
Reformation Sunday
Gospel Lesson: John 8:31-36
Theme: The Truth Sets Us Free
Call To Worship
Leader: Come, let us praise the Lord!
People: Let us sing for joy to God.
Leader: Let us come before him with thanksgiving;
People: and sing joyful songs of praise.
Leader: Come, let us bow down and worship the Lord, our Maker.
Collect
Most Merciful Father, we pray for the Church founded by your Son, Jesus Christ. In the midst of the world's turmoil and secularism the Church stands in need of unity and renewal. Through the power of your Holy Spirit, renew in the whole Church, we pray, a passionate desire for the coming of your kingdom, which will unite all Christians in one mission to the world. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, we confess that we have sinned against you. We have failed to do your will, and we have failed to work in the spirit of unity within the Church. Forgive us, we pray, and set us free from the bonds of guilt that we may obey your teachings and be true disciples of Jesus. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
O God, we present these offerings with a prayer for unity among the branches of your Church. Use these gifts and us to work for that unity, which will enable Christians everywhere to work together for your kingdom. Amen.
Hymns
"A Mighty Fortress Is Our God"
"O God, Our Help In Ages Past"
"The Church's One Foundation"
