With an Eye to the New
We have here the account of how David was made king over all the tribes of Israel, after ruling for six years over just the tribe of Judah in the south. After the death of Saul and Jonathan, of which we heard last Sunday, the men of Judah anointed David in 1000 B.C. as their king, in the city of Hebron (2 Samuel 2:4). But Abner, the commander of Saul's army, declared the son of Saul, Ishbosheth, to be king over Israel in the North (2 Samuel 2:8--9).
