Aids To The Psalms
Vindicate me, O God, and defend my cause
against an ungodly people;
from those who are deceitful and unjust
deliver me!
For you are the God in whom I take refuge;
why have you cast me off?
Why must I walk about mournfully
because of the oppression of the enemy?
O send out your light and your truth;
let them lead me;
let them bring me to your holy hill
and to your dwelling.
Then I will go to the altar of God,
to God my exceeding joy;
and I will praise you with the harp,
O God, my God.
Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my help and my God.
Alternate Image
The Singer is in court. He has fought long and hard for a moral and just cause. The opposition has lied, cheated, spread false rumors, promoted misleading media campaigns, bribed the jury, blackmailed the judge; they just haven't played fair. During an adjournment for lunch the Singer finds a quiet place to pray. He complains to God, "There is no justice in this trial. Why haven't you come to my rescue and destroyed the opposition?" The Singer is tired of fighting lost causes. He beseeches God, "I want to go home. I'm tired and I just want to rest. Let me return to Eden where there was justice. Why can't the world be perfect? Is there justice anywhere? Can I ever go home? Are you with me?" The Singer pauses, listens, smiles and goes back into the courtroom humming a pleasant tune.
Reflection
Sometimes the world just seems like too much. All the bad guys are winning and the good guys are ridiculed or ignored. Even watching the news on television can bring tears to our eyes. We complain to God in our prayers about the bloom of evil and wonder why God allows it. Fighting for worthwhile but unending lost causes wears us out. We'd like to retreat to the safety of our innocent childhood homes. But we know we can't go home again or return to innocence. How can we return to Eden? We need a guide and only one guide will do, Jesus Christ. Our advocate is with us, our guide will show us the way, our redeemer will take us to the garden with a song in our hearts.
