Call To Worship
Psalm 34:1-8
Leader:
I will extol the Lord at all times;
People:
Praise will always be on my lips.
Leader:
My soul will boast in the Lord;
People:
Let the hurting hear and rejoice.
Leader:
Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt God together.
People:
I sought the Lord and was answered;
Leader:
He delivered me from all my fears.
People:
Those who look to God are radiant;
Leader:
The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him,
People:
Taste and see that the Lord is good;
Leader:
Blessed are those who take refuge in the Lord.
People:
Amen.
This little chorus is a great Call To Worship.
Humble thyself in the sight of the Lord
Humble thyself in the sight of the Lord
And he -- will lift -- you up -- higher and higher
And he -- will lift -- you up.
Written by Sam Lee, a teen in our congregation.
Leader:
Today is the one day of the week when we take time
People:
To set aside our differences and focus on one thing.
Leader:
Let us set our differences aside
People:
And learn to accept each other as we are,
Leader:
So we may see the one thing that matters,
People:
The face of God.
Leader:
Let us worship God.
People:
Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
A general prayer.
Leader:
It is plain and simple, Lord,
People:
We are more concerned with our own comfort and security,
Leader:
Than we are with chasing the truth
People:
Or seeking justice.
Leader:
We are less concerned with full and vibrant lives,
People:
Than we are with safe and easy lives.
Leader:
So we allow ourselves to be satisfied with life's accessories,
People:
Instead of the real thing.
Leader:
Help us to feel the emptiness of new cars and VCRs,
People:
And stylish homes,
Leader:
And all the other lures of the comfortable life,
People:
And make us hunger for truth and righteousness.
Leader:
We ask it in Jesus' name.
People:
Amen.
Option two.
Leader:
We hold on to every anxiety and irritant.
People:
We let them control us.
Leader:
The kids haven't cleaned their rooms.
People:
We get irritated.
Leader:
Someone forgets to say thank you.
People:
We feel slighted.
Leader:
Bills are mounting.
People:
We fret.
Leader:
An old hurt surfaces in our memories.
People:
Bitterness boils up in us.
Leader:
All these poisons eating at our souls.
People:
Lord, forgive us for holding on
Leader:
To all this garbage.
People:
Empower us to release them,
Leader:
To overlook the little irritants
People:
We allow to damage our relationships;
Leader:
To forget the perceived slights;
People:
To leave the future in your hands;
Leader:
To forgive the old hurts.
People:
Set us free, Lord.
Leader:
And we shall be free indeed.
People:
In Christ's name we pray. Amen.
Assurance Of Pardon
Leader:
This is the good news! Forgiveness is free,
People:
And abundant,
Leader:
But it cannot be received without true repentance.
People:
So let us turn from our sins of repression,
Leader:
Let us seek justice and mercy,
People:
That we might know the richness of our God's grace.
Leader:
Amen.
Prayer Of Dedication
Lord, we have tasted and found that you satisfy the spirit. Use the gifts that we lay before you this morning to create opportunities for others to taste and find that the Lord is good indeed. Amen.
Prayer For Illumination
Leader:
We call it the Word of God,
People:
But we don't always hear it that way.
Leader:
We think of it as an old book of wisdom,
People:
An out-of-date rule book,
Leader:
A nice story book,
People:
But the actual Word of God? No.
Leader:
Help us today, O Lord, to hear this reading,
People:
As words directly from you.
Leader:
In Jesus' name we ask it.
People:
Amen.
Pastoral Prayer
This prayer is directed toward a world in need.
Awesome God, anxiety is on the rise all over our small world. War continues across the sea, international tensions remain high, the flames of religious hatreds are being fanned, economies languish, starvation rages through Africa, AIDS strikes down the young and promising, and we are spectators to it all.
In these times of sweeping change and terrible turmoil, help us keep our eyes firmly fixed on you that we might be confident of your care and control of all things, and help us keep our ears and minds tuned to hear you that we might discern how to live in these times.
Lord, we pray this prayer not only for ourselves but also for the political leaders of our nation, and nations abroad, that they may dedicate themselves to the good of their people and not their party or themselves. Turn the hearts of each and every leader to the people. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
Benediction
Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessings come to those who do. Amen.
