How right he was when Jesus said,
'The two shall be as one,'
when there’s a real marriage
and the Father’s will is done.

For then there is commitment
on the part of man and wife
to working out the problems
that come into every life.

We find that joy is doubled
when, in love it can be shared
and troubles cut in half
so their full burden can be spared.

And in a real marriage,
there is more that can be said
of the way we grow together
and the way our souls are fed.

I would hope for every couple
they would find before the end
that the one whom each has married
is the very truest friend.

For when there is a failure
in the marriage bond, you see,
there is pain for both the members
in that nuptial surgery.

Even though in total silence
or in anger strong and clear
disappointment may be covered
at the loss of hope so dear.

So when I see a wedding,
for each couple I will pray
that God, somehow will lead them
so that always they can say

That in all their life together
they are truly now as one
And the two they were is smaller
then the one they have become.
