Call To Worship (based on Psalm 91)
One: You who live in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the Lord, "My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust."
All: For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence; he will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
One: You will not fear the terror of the night, or the arrow that flies by day, or the pestilence that stalks in darkness, or the destruction that wastes at noonday.
All: A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.
One: Because you have made the Lord your refuge, the Most High your dwelling place, no evil shall befall you, no scourge come near your tent.
All: For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.
One: Those who love me, I will deliver; I will protect those who know my name. When they call to me, I will answer them; I will be with them in trouble, I will rescue them and honor them.
All: With long life I will satisfy them, and show them my salvation.
Collect
Day by day, dear Lord, three things we pray: to see thee more clearly, love thee more dearly, and follow thee more nearly, day by day. Amen.
-- Richard of Chichester (c. 1197-1253)
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, we hear your promises, but in our midst there is pain and suffering when life is cut short. We struggle with the contradictions between what we read in your scriptures and what we observe in our lives. But we know that with you all will be well, and all manner of things will be well. If we cannot always hear your answer, allow us to feel your presence in your midst. When we live the rich life you have promised us as disciples, then every day can be as a thousand years, and we become every bit as strong as your heroes of old. Hear our prayer. Draw us closer together as your disciples and your people. Amen.
