Lectionary Worship Workbook, Series IV, Cycle C
Soul Motion
Object:
If we love the Lord with all our hearts, minds, and strength,
we are going to have to stretch our hearts, open our minds,
and strengthen our souls ... God cannot lodge in a narrow mind;
God cannot lodge in a small heart. To accommodate God they must be palatial.
-- William Sloan Coffin, Credo
Call To Worship
Leader: Some people look forward to Sundays as a time to relax. Some look forward to Mondays when classes begin; some look forward to Fridays when the weekend begins. Some people are always looking ahead; some frequently look to the past. What about you?
People: We are "some people" who live fully in this moment, aware that the breath of life is a gift that has an ending. We want to enjoy God and one another.
Leader: Are you preparing for autumn and slowing down till Advent?
People: This week, we intentionally take stock of how we spend our time -- especially examining the work we do with our hands, our minds, our bodies, and our psyches.
Leader: Look carefully. In the past, people have allowed the culture to extract energy and loyalty, leaving little for God and family.
People: We know the biblical prophets accused the ancient Hebrews of exchanging their God-concept for the goods and values of other cultures.
Leader: Even though they were provided water and food through the desert years, Bible stories tell us that the people neglected their relationship with the giver of finest wheat and honey!
People: This weekend, we determine again to honor the Giver of Life by doing creative, meaningful work, maintaining empowering relationships, and sharing what we have with others.
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
Giver of Life -- thank you for days to rest, for opportunities to celebrate the changing of the seasons, to be grateful for jobs that put bread on our tables, and for work that satisfies our minds and souls. Thank you for your dependable presence with us. Bring us close to your heart; let us feel Christ animating us. Amen.
Call To Confession (Leader)
We say we see ourselves in Bible stories. Today's stories point out our tendencies to resist divine guidance and neglect being grateful for what comes to us. In these moments, look within and clarify for yourself and with God the prejudices and narrow thoughts, which diminish your ability to reveal the Great Mystery we call God. Pray with me and then make your own prayers.
Community Confession (Unison)
Great Mystery -- we hear you call to us; we recognize that you make our burdens lighter.
We acknowledge that our basic needs are met.
Yet we spend our resources on things the culture values, sometimes stubbornly resisting what we think you would have us be and do. We tend to ignore our neighbors and our enemies.
Amplify our minds; expand our hearts; stretch our souls to accommodate your love; encourage us to participate with you in developing a bit of heaven on earth. Amen.
Sermon Idea
A job is what we do to earn money necessary to survive in our culture. Money is the medium by which we barter for what we want/need. Work is how we manifest our creativity and thoughts. For people whose work and job coincide -- wow, living can be good! Psalm 112 describes happiness for those whose work honors the Holy One. Luke 14:7-14 suggests that competition and profit cannot be the goals of our jobs or our work. Perhaps the primary focus could be on jobs we are afraid to get out of and the jobs that compromise our perception of Divine grace and the jobs that satisfy us and make the world a better residence. Satisfying jobs and vital work stimulate us to be humble and hospitable. Another issue that might be explored through all the texts is: Capitalism and an economy based on profit cannot be hospitable, democratic, and promote justice.
A more negative approach could be explored with Jeremiah who says the people ruined the fertile land, explored idols, and accused God of being useless. It might be difficult to make a comparison between ancient Israel and America without also comparing ancient Israel with contemporary Israel. This could be "touchy."
Contemporary Affirmation (Unison)
The Divine Imagination continues to be at work in the world;
God breathes life and proclaims it good.
The Divine Worker was revealed in Jesus of Nazareth
who moved among people healing, mentoring, feeding, and renewing.
The Divine Artist continues to create through us,
inspiring us to exhibit the Christ in our choices and decisions.
In community, we encourage one another to explore who we
can become as twenty-first-century friends of Jesus.
Together, we can be honest, compassionate, and hopeful.
Let it be so. Amen!
Offertory Statement (Leader)
Be grateful people; praise the sky and the earth.
Honor the Creator with your resources and your loyalty.
Doxology
Christ, Whose Glory Fills The Skies (v. 1)
Christ, whose glory fills the skies, Christ, the true, the only light,
Sun of Righteousness, arise, triumph o'er the shades of night;
Dayspring from on high, be near; Daystar in my heart appear.
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
Great God -- we honor you with our work and our jobs, with our gifts and our attitudes. Thank you for abundant life, for the beauty of the world, and for the friends who sit with us today. Use our talents and our money to make this world more hospitable. Amen.
Intercessory Prayers (Leader or Readers)
Busy God -- we see you continually creating and re-creating. We see evidence of your expansive imagination. We feel you busy among us, making things different from last year, refocusing our thoughts and compelling us to expand our perceptions of divinity and humanity. We want to love you with our whole selves; revamp our souls to be palatial.
Midwifing God -- birth through us a new world order, a reign of justice and compassion, an era with honest politics and compassionate leaders. Move among this planet's palette of people until peace spills out. Nurture governments until they protect the cosmos and feed the children. Keep harmful elements away; halt dangerous toxins that threaten to destroy goodness.
Animating God -- we understand ourselves to be formed in your image. But we get weary; our bones make us cry "ouch": disease overpowers our organs; loneliness makes us grouchy; jobs-without-meaning cripple our imaginations; cynicism diminishes our willingness to be good neighbors. Breathe new life into us again. Open our eyes to work that is satisfying for our minds and souls. Heal us and activate deep peace in our muscles. Amen.
Benediction (Leader)
As you leave the sanctuary to work and play,
Be aware that your cup of life is at least half full!
Notice that the roof over your home is strong.
Notice soft breezes, warm fires, and smiles of friends.
Take time to be grateful for who you are;
Check in with who you are becoming.
God, Animator of the Cosmos, is blessing you.
Go gently. Amen!
