Poems Based on Lectionary Gospels
When Jesus called a dozen
from the field and shop and shore,
they all rose up and followed,
were with him a year or more.
By parables he taught them,
how his Father’s kingdom was.
They were learning as they watched him
heal the sick and leperous.
But the time came when, no longer
did he tell them only, 'Come.'
He also told them, 'Go and heal
the blind, the deaf and dumb.'
He sent them out to preach and
call the people to repent.
And, two and two together,
they went out as they were sent.
Things are really not much different
from the way they were of old.
We are called to be disciples
and to follow we are told.
But we’re also told to, 'Go'
And call the peoples to repent
for the healing of the nations
as the first apostles went.
We are called, not just to 'keep the faith.'
Instead, we’re called to share.
And we find the more we give away,
the more we have to spare.
So let us be disciples,
called to follow Jesus’ word.
And let us also go and be
apostles of the Lord.
