Throughout the ancient world being the friend of the king meant that you trusted the king to protect and advance you as your patron. To be the friend of a king did not mean that the two were partners, companions, or members of the same lodge. The friend worked for the king for unofficial wages, and those wages came as opportunities to share the king's lands, revenues, and booty from military victories.
