Object:
A picture of a hand, foot, eye, and ear
(Display pictures one at a time, or if you have enough children, have four of them stand in front and hold the pictures.) Can you tell what these are? (Children respond.) Pictures of a hand, foot, eye, and ear. Look at these pictures for a moment, and tell me which one of them is most important to your body. What do you think, which one is most important? (Allow answers one at a time.) It is kind of difficult to decide which one is most important. If you didn't have a hand, it would be tough to play the piano or cut your food. If you didn't have a foot, you could still get around but it wouldn't be the same. Not being able to see would really change your life, and losing your hearing would close out a big part of your world.
Hmm, it seems like they are all important. There is a man in the Bible named Paul who tried to teach us some things about the body. Paul said that our bodies have many parts, and that all the parts belong to the same body. He was right. We have hands and feet, eyes and ears, noses and lips, and so on, and all those parts belong to our body.
The whole body is not made up of just one part, is it? We'd look pretty silly if we were just one big nose or one big foot. We need all the parts to be a complete body.
Paul said the church was like the body of Christ, and it needed all its parts to be a whole body. Our bodies need all their parts to work correctly and the church needs all its parts to work smoothly. What if the church only had preachers? What if the church only had people who could work in the nursery or who could only serve in the kitchen? What if the church only had people who could meet others at the door or who could sing in the choir? Do you see the problem? We need all the parts.
Paul knew what he was talking about. Our bodies have lots of parts and each one is important, but none of them is more important than the others. It takes all the parts for the body to work best. It's the same with the church. The church, the body of Christ, is made up of many parts, and each part has a special job to do. The church cannot work as it's supposed to if some of the parts are missing.
Make sure you are at church to do your part, because you are important, and the church, the body of Christ, is not the same when you are not here! God bless you.
