Familiar Expressions from the Bible
Object:
Expression: A person after one's own heart
Location: Acts 13:22
Verse: And when he [God] had removed him [King Saul], he [God] raised up unto [for] them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfill all my will.
People like to be in the company of those with whom they can agree on certain ideas. If we hear a political speech from a person with whom we agree, it is very likely that we would say, "That is a person after my own heart."
If a judge announces a decision that people might agree with, they could easily say, "That judge is a person after my own heart."
The Bible also uses this expression. For instance, Paul and his companions on one of their preaching journeys went to Pisidian Antioch. On the sabbath day they entered the synagogue and sat down. During the worship they were invited to speak if they had a message of encouragement for the people.
Paul stood and began to relate the history of the Israelites. He told of their covenant with God, their bondage in Egypt, their plight of forty years in the desert, how God had given them judges to govern, then responded to the people's request for a king. God gave them their first king, Saul, son of Kish of the tribe of Benjamin, who ruled forty years. Then Paul related this scripture stated above concerning the next king, David.
