A story from my youth comes to mind about a Native American man who was walking the city streets of a tenement district with a New Yorker. In the midst of a din of traffic and people noises, the Native American said, "I hear a cricket." The New Yorker couldn't believe that anyone could pick out the sound of the cricket in all of that noise. The visitor listened again, then walked back two houses and reached up into the flower box on a window sill, and pulled out the cricket. The obvious moral is that we hear what we've trained ourselves to listen for, in the midst of a cacophony of sounds.
