Devotional
Companion to the Psalter
A Devotional Guide to the Psalms
Object:
Those who walk blamelessly and do what is right
and speak the truth from their heart.
-- Psalm 15:2
Theme: Who is worthy to dwell in Zion -- near the LORD?
Outline
1 -- The question, "Who is worthy?"
2 -- The person of integrity, justice, truthfulness.
3-5 -- Instances of these qualities.
6 -- Promise of blessing.
Notes
• Liturgy -- Instruction
• Probably composed for the bringing of the Ark of the Covenant into the tent, David prepared for it in Zion. (See 2 Samuel 6:17.)
• Probably used by pilgrims with the question of verse 1 answered by the priest (vv. 2-5).
For Reflection
• The condition for an Israelite to have fellowship with God is fulfilling his duty to the neighbor!
• Taking it clause by clause, how does one fare in this self-examination? (See Hebrews 10:19-22.)
• For worthiness to dwell in the presence of God see Psalm 51:11 and Jude 1:24.
Prayer
Lord God, because of our sinfulness we are unfit to live with you. You humbled yourself in Jesus Christ, your Son, to come and dwell with us. We praise you for bringing us to yourself, forgiven and cleansed, and with the promise that we shall dwell one day with you face to face. May we reflect your humility and love to others. Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God forever. Amen.
