O LORD, my God, in you I take refuge;

but establish the righteous,
you who test the minds and hearts,
O righteous God.

Notes
• Lament
• The psalm reflects the early years of David as he was hunted by Saul. (See 1 Samuel 14-23.)
• "According to my righteousness" in David's case means, "my innocence of those false accusations -- not moral perfection" (v. 8).
• The LORD is active as Judge: testing minds and hearts (v. 9), indignant of those who refuse to repent (vv. 11-13), lets their own misdeeds fall back on themselves (v. 15), bringing an end to evil (v. 9), saving the "upright in heart" (v. 10).
Prayer
O God, you act to bring justice to the world. Give us repentant and upright hearts and minds, cleanse us of sin, and make us a people ever thanking and praising you through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
