Advent
Lighting The Second Advent Candle
Reader 1: We come to worship today to celebrate both life and death.
Reader 2: We are here to anticipate the birth of our Lord Jesus by lighting Advent candles, and to acknowledge His coming death through celebrating the Lord's Supper.
Reader 1: Birth and death. The story of us all.
Reader 2: But in Christ Jesus, it is birth to death, then death to eternal life.
Reader 1: Listen to the words of God, as He speaks to His Suffering Servant: "I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations." (Isaiah 42:6 RSV)
Reader 2: So we light the second candle of Advent to commemorate the gift of the Savior as a light to the nations. For He who was born in Bethlehem is the Light of the World, and salvation to all who believe.
Prayer: O God, enter the dark areas of our lives this morning, and bring the healing light of Your love to our souls. Grant that we may recognize Your saving work in our world today, through the birth that we celebrate, and the death that we commemorate, each of which expresses Your gracious love for us. Amen.
