Pastor: "Words! Words! Words!" cried Eliza Doolittle. She said she was "sick of words!"
People: She wanted actions to back up those flowery phrases.
Pastor: And sometimes, so do we. But the words coming from the voice of God are quite another matter. Sense the rhythmic march of that divine communication in Psalm 29, as the voice of God goes over the land:
People: The voice of the Lord is powerful.
Pastor: The voice of the Lord is majestic.
People: The voice of God shatters the mighty cedars and oaks.
Pastor: The voice of the Lord God shakes the desert.
People: The voice of the Lord strikes with flashes of lightning.
All: (To be sung) "Commune With Me" (Copy in, using CCLI#)
Pastor: The Lord spoke to the people out of the midst of the fire at Sinai. They heard the words but saw no form, for there was only a voice. He established His covenant with them through the Ten Commandments. (Deuteronomy 4:12)
People: When Elijah ran out into the wilderness for fear of his life, the Lord communicated with him through a "still, small voice," admonishing him to take up his prophetic duties again.
Pastor: The word of the Lord came to Isaiah, telling him to prophesy.
People: And to Jeremiah, encouraging him to remain strong.
Pastor: And so we have come to worship -- to hear from the Lord, not empty words that Eliza Doolittle complained about, but words filled with a holy love and a divine commissioning to follow His bidding and accomplish His will.
People: Open our hearts and our minds, O God, that we may receive from You today those messages which will be for our benefit and for our glory.
Hymn: "Lord, Speak To Me"
Invocation
