Lighting The Fourth Advent Candle
Hymn: (Have a child sing "This Little Light Of Mine." The choir joins her/him on the second verse. The congregation joins child and choir on third and fourth verses.)
Reader 1: Remember how Jesus said, "In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven"? (Matthew 5:16 NRSV)
Reader 2: But before we were able to do that, Jesus Himself, the Light of the World, had to come into the darkness of human sin and bring with Him that healing illumination of spiritual health and hope.
Reader 1: As we come to worship on this Christmas Sunday, we remember the words of the prophet Isaiah, "... the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death, light has dawned."
Reader 2: So, on this fourth Sunday of Advent, we light four candles, with the assurance that with the coming of the Christ child, the Light of Life cannot be extinguished, nor can the powers of Satan overcome it, for God's salvation of His people cannot be denied.
Prayer: We praise You, Oh God, for the gift of life eternal. We thank You for the light that illumines our paths, and makes known to us our way. In this Christmas season, lead us to yearn for the light rather than the darkness of sinful ways; and show us Your glory, and the wondrous love that awaits those who claim Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Amen.
