Call To Worship
Leader: When all seems hopeless, there God is.
People: When broken relationships smash human dreams,
Leader: When all seems hopeless, God intervenes for now and for all future generations.
People: When no one dares come forward to bridge chasms of misunderstanding,
Leader: When all seems hopeless, God offers the rainbow.
Collect
Loving God, your constancy encourages us to move toward listening, understanding, and connecting with those with whom we appear to share no point of empathy. We need the acceptance of your rainbow signs. We need the goodwill of your promises. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Never again, we promise. Then we utter ill-treating words in a mean moment. Never again, we vow. Then we get tired or let jealousy rise, and we speak with hurtful tones. We do not do a good job of keeping our promises, God. Help us to be more like you. Help us to honor our promises of "never again." Amen.
20B Hymns1
"In The Midst Of New Dimensions" Tune: NEW DIMENSIONS
"Just As I Am" Tune: WOODWORTH
"Let Us Hope When Hope Seems Hopeless" Tune: LET US HOPE2
First Sunday In Lent
Second Lesson: 1 Peter 3:18-22
Theme: Saved
Call To Worship
Come to worship reminded during these days and nights of Lent that through all of our struggles God acts on our behalf and for our welfare.
Collect
We pray to you, O saving God, aware that the suffering of Christ was to bring us closer to you. As you raised Christ out of the depths, so do you enter our turmoil and lift us from despair. In the name of Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We yearn to return to you, O God. We reach out in the dark hoping by chance to find you. Then we discover you have been waiting for us all along. You wait to return us to the saving, life-giving spirit of our baptism. Through the suffering of Christ. Amen.
20B Hymns1
"[Born][Son] Of God, Eternal Savior" Tune: IN BABILONE or WEISSE FLAGGEN
"Out Of The Depths I Cry To You" Tune: AUS TIEFER NOT
"Lord, Save Thy World" or "Creator Of The Earth And Skies" Tune: UFFINGHAM
First Sunday In Lent
Gospel: Mark 1:9-15
Theme: Forty
Call To Worship
Leader: Forty days and forty nights, the rains came tumbling down during the great flood. Forty days and forty nights, Jesus endured the wilderness. Forty.
People: Forty. A long time to wait. A long time to be patient. A long time to learn.
Leader: Forty days of Lent. Time enough to reflect and become reacquainted with ourselves. Time enough to gather wisdom. Time enough to know we are God's beloved. Come, let us begin.
Collect
O God, for whom rainbows and doves, floods and baptism, being afloat and bewildered, and a nimble Spirit coming are all related, it is you who sends hope when hope seems hopeless. Thank you. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
But, God, forty days in Bible times represented a generation -- a day for a year of wandering, a year of life. Will temptation never end? Will the resolution of friction ever subside? Will we ever fully know ourselves or you? Grant us hope when hope seems hopeless. Amen.
20B Hymns1
"Forty Days And Forty Nights" Tune: HEINLEIN
"O God, How We Have Wandered" Tune: PASSION CHORALE
"Lord Jesus, Who Through Forty Days" Tune: ST. FLAVIAN
