The Nails of the Cross
Worship
Contemporary Worship Resources For Lent
During World War II the cathedral at Coventry, England, was largely destroyed by incendiary bombs dropped by German planes. The roof burned and collapsed, the interior furnishings burned, but the charred walls remained. During the cleanup of the ruins, a number of large nails were found among the charred timbers. They had been used in the construction of the roof and were thought by some to be reminiscent of the type used in the first century to nail victims to a cross for crucifixation.
